Three of diamonds opening strategy. In Big 2 Poker, the player who is dealt the three of diamonds opens the game play. Of course, there is less than two percent chance that you will get this card, but when you do, you will have the benefit of controlling much of your play throughout the hand. Use this to your advantage when you are lucky enough to get it.
Winning the hand to control the table. One of the unique aspects of big 2 poker is that the winner controls the table. Winning puts you in charge of how many cards are in the starting hand that is played first, which gives you an advantage that the losers won’t have.
Sort your hand for better play. Take a cue from the spade or clubs players that you know and sort your hand. Holding thirteen cards in one hand can be confusing. Having everything sorted by suit value or by face will allow you to easily see group of cards that can be legal plays. Remember, the sooner you rid yourself of the cards that you are holding in big 2 poker, the sooner you can win the hand and get paid.
Getting rid of less-than-good cards. In big 2 poker, getting rid of the lowest value cards first lets you save your best cards for bigger plays.
Get rid of four cards as soon as possible. In big 2 poker, when you have a good hand but someone sneaks up with a better one, holding those cards until the last possible moment is bad strategy. Be sure to get beneath the threshold of nine cards to avoid being penalized more points per remaining card if someone else gets rid of their cards first. In other words, don’t be greedy because it can cost you big in the end.
Watch your opponent’s cards closely. When your opponents have fewer cards, they are less likely to have a big 2 poker hand that can beat the hand that you are holding. Inversely, be cautious to not open the table with a “poker” hand too early because it might be beat.
Choose your starting card combination carefully in big 2 poker. If you have both a high card combo and a low card combo, starting with the low one is your best strategy because you will ordinarily play the higher hand when play moves around to you again. Many players also use the opposite of this strategy in what is known as “cut throat” strategy by starting with high card combos that other players cannot play on, causing them to hold their cards longer. This cut throat strategy can often backfire, however, so use it with caution. If you think your opponents may be playing the cut throat strategy in big 2 poker, be sure that you are under the threshold with your remaining cards to avoid a huge penalty in the end and play less aggressively but cautiously.
Go out with a bang. Ending your hand by playing more than one card in your final throw down will catch your opponents by surprise and allow you to catch them with the most cards possible.
